One of goalkeeper duty is to coordinate his teammates in defending. New Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is asked to not hesitate on doing it.
When a freekick happens, the goalkeeper usually shouts to coordinate the wall. While when a corner kick happens, a goalkeeper not only need to shout but even need to place his teammate to stand in the place where the goalkeeper wants.
Generally a goalkeeper’s duty is to coordinate the defender when defending. That thing is useful to avoid a miscommunication which can be a mistake and profitable for the enemy.
The same duty will be carried by De Gea. The new Manchester United goalkeeper will play with senior players as Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, John O’Shea in The Red Devils defense.
One of Manchester United legend, Arthur Albiston asks De Gea to not hesitate to coordinate his teammates in the defense line.
Albiston compares the situation which is experienced by former Atletico Madrid player with one of Manchester United goalkeeper Gary Bailey. Bailey did his debut with The Red Devils on 1978 and then replaced his senior position Alex Stepney.
“De Gea has the same situation with Gary Bailey, he joined the team in the very young age and then Gary became a fantastic goalkeeper,” said Albiston as quoted from Manchester United official website.
“I don’t know if De Gea is a full of confidence person or has a strong character. But Bailey had a strong personality and high confidence. Even he just started his career here, he didn’t hesitate to command the experienced defenders.” said the player who played as left defender in Manchester United on 1974 – 1988.
“That is the thing that should be done by a goalkeeper and some goalkeepers get a trouble on this thing. But all players must communicate in the field and goalkeeper must shout loudly and coordinate the defense.”
“De Gea has proved himself that he could player under thousand gaze of the supporters. What he needs is only understanding his teammates especially the defenders. Like Bailey, Schemechel, and Van der Sar, he doesn’t need to hesitate to say what his teammates should do.”
